The chaotic situation at our southern border serves as a glaring invitation for cartels to effortlessly smuggle dangerous drugs into our nation. The repercussions of this border crisis reverberate across every state in the union, including New Jersey. Deadly substances such as fentanyl, a synthetic opioid favored by cartels, are claiming the lives of thousands of Americans each year.

  • According to the CDC, In January 2021, drug overdose deaths exceeded homicides by 306.7%. [10]

  • The number of overdose deaths involving synthetic opioids in 2020 was more than 18 times the number in 2013. [10]

  • In New Jersey, fentanyl related deaths climbed to almost 2250 deaths in 2019 from 475 in 2015, a 373% increase. This rate is expected to climb. [11]

  • Of the confirmed drug overdose deaths in New Jersey in 2019, fentanyl deaths outpaced all other opioids. District 12 counties (Mercer, Union, Middlesex, Somerset) represent 401, or 18%, of the total New Jersey fentanyl deaths. See the chart below. [11]
